Residences for the Elderly

A private residence for the elderly is a place which offers a more or less wide range of services such as meals, nursing care, personal assistance, domestic help, security and supervision. These residences are owned and managed by entirely private interests unlike the majority of residential and long-term care centres (CHSLD).

For more information about residences for the elderly in the Montérégie, consult the Registre des résidences pour personnes âgées  (listing of residences, in french only) on the Québec Minister of Health and Social services website.

In accordance with the Act respecting health and social services, each private residence must obtain a certificate of compliance, which is a certificate that guarantees that the residence meets certain requirements as regards security and the quality of their services.
The certification process emphasises criteria which relate to the facilities and access to high quality health and social services. It also ensures the respect for certain human values such as courtesy, equality, understanding and respect of the dignity and independence of individuals.
The Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de la Montérégie is responsable for the certification process for residences for the elderly.
