What is the short-term geriatric unit?

The short-term geriatric unit at the CISSS de la Montérégie-Ouest provides inpatient services to vulnerable people, or those with a geriatric profile, who have a health problem compounded by polypathological, psychological or social complications.

Also called active geriatrics (AG), the short-term geriatric unit provides inpatient services to vulnerable people, or those with a geriatric profile, who have a health problem compounded by polypathological, psychological or social complications. Users can come from within the hospital or from home.

Objective

The objective is to give the user the best possible chance of returning home by preventing and slowing the loss of autonomy; this is done by providing them with the following services:

  • assessment;
  • treatment;
  • rehabilitation;
  • referrals.

Eligibility

A doctor’s prescription is needed to access the short-term geriatric unit.

The user must present with a geriatric complication and require care by the specialized multidisciplinary geriatrics team. They must also be experiencing a deterioration in their health condition that cannot be properly assessed and treated on an outpatient basis.

Once admitted to the UCDG, the user still requires regular medical follow-up, even after their acute health problem has stabilized. They must have access to the hospital’s technical platform for examinations, treatments and intensive rehabilitation.
